چکیده

Pulse oximetry and NIRS are fundamental technologies in anesthesia and critical care for monitoring oxygenation of the arterial blood and the tissue. Both technologies are based on photometric or spectroscopic methods. Combining both technologies in one sensor-system is the next step for advances in clinical monitoring to get better information about oxygenation and perfusion of patients. A new sensor system is introduced in this article and first example measurements are described.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Lower Extremity Acute Compartment Syndrome: A Review of the Literature

Similar to pulse-oximetry, Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) uses the proportionate differential in reflection and absorption of different wavelengths of light (Beer-Lambert Law) to estimate the proportion of hemoglobin saturated with oxygen approximately 2-3 cm below the sensor. The depth of readings is based on the separation between the light source (s) and the receptor (s); the farther the ...

Evaluation and Improvement of Knowledge of Medical staff on Pulse Oximetry in Educational Hospitals

Background: Pulse Oximeter monitoring has become so common over previous decades that in some health care units, blood oxygen level is now considered as the fifth vital sign. However, it seems there is still some lack of knowledge and/or experience among medical staff operating pulse oximeter and interpreting its results. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the knowledge on Pul...

Evaluation of Pulse Oximetry in the Early Detection of Congenital Heart Diseases in Newborns

Background: Congenital heart diseases, which are asymptomatic at birth, are the most important causes of infant mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the role of pulse oximetry in the early detection of congenital heart diseases among newborns. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 1230 newborns who were born in university hospitals in an urban area of Iran were placed unde...

Experimental and theoretical comparison of NIR spectroscopy measurements of cerebral hemoglobin changes.

Two near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) methods are available for measuring changes (Delta) in total cerebral hemoglobin concentration (CHC): 1) a continuous measurement of the changes in total hemoglobin concentration (Delta[Hb]tot) and 2) the difference between two absolute measurements of CHC, each derived from a small, controlled change in inspired O2 fraction. This paper investigates the int...
